History and haunting

The Wheatsheaf is situated in a very traditional country setting in the hamlet of Ellens Green an original Saxon settlement which was called Alywynes Green after one of their chieftains. The inn dates as far back as the 1500’s situated on the road running between Rudgwick and Cranleigh it has been a travelers retreat and local spot for hunters and farmers to enjoy a well earned pint of bitter after long days toil. The pub has had many changes over the years but still keeps many of the original features including wattle and daub walls.

As with most old pubs the Wheatsheaf has had its fair share of spectral sightings over the years with the most recent being a floating lumberjack in one of the bedrooms upstairs! Sightings of a young boy are also documented and tales of pots and pans being thrown in the kitchen are told by the chefs. On the positive side it has always been noted that the ghosts seem to be of a friendly disposition!

Other sightings of strange things include the famous Surrey puma roaming around local fields and growling at drinkers on their way home!

In the garden there are two large mounds and rumor has it that they may be a Viking burial ground. However there is also a theory that it may be a load of rubble that lazy builders could not be bothered to move!
